Laurence Aberforth has never been in love. The first time he meets the impulsive and charming Gilbert Heckwith, he accepts a wager as to whether or not true love exists in the world. Amidst the playful flirtation of their new friendship, they explore the concept of love through philosophy and poetry, and the two of them ultimately find the proof of their wager in each other. Clean romance, no cheating, no cliffhangers, standalone novella.

A Wager of Love M/M Historical Romance edition by Katherine Marlowe Romance eBooks

This one is a surprise and it's a wonderful one. Laurie and Gilbert are quite unique characters--Laurie is a total country gentleman virgin in every sense, Gilbert is widely experienced in MM sex but it's never mentioned or implied until it's necessary. By then you will be enchanted by how these two play around trying to define love, from totally opposite perspectives.

Some may lose patience with the way the tale unfolds--it's more of a journey for both rather than a plot. And the liberal use of poetry may jog some memories, or cause some to sneer. But in the end there is a true feeling that without the poetry, and without the patience and love Laurie and Gilbert have set before each other, this would not work. That it does is another tribute to an author who is very serious, indeed.

A Wager of Love M/M Historical Romance edition by Katherine Marlowe Romance eBooks Reviews

Love does exist. Although throughout the book there is much debate on this topic. Gilbert Heckwith has the fortunate position to be educated, wealthy and bold but he just cannot be sure if love is real. Until Laurence Aberforth appears.

The back and forth is a little heady. Most of it is expressed through the dialogue The author brings in classical philosophy to make points about it existing or not with a series of challenges and demonstrations of love, and not just romantic love but humanitarian love, familial love, all kinds of love. Meanwhile the sexual tension rests between the two gentleman all in the era where it is taboo to be gay. They explore their own feelings too. Unsure of how to take different touches, casual or otherwise.

It's an ambitious romance, to be sure. Totally worth the buck.
If you're looking for a steamy, sexy book, this isn't the one for you. The courtship between the two men is adorably innocent. Two men meet at a party and make a wager as to whether true love exists. We all know who's going to win this one.

I didn't mind the predictability, though, because the language was at times amusing, and often beautiful. This is a strongly dialogue-driven book, and it works mainly on the strength of the Gilbert character. Laurie is wonderful also, but Gilbert is a true imp, but one with a deeper soul than one might at first assume.

The only reason I am unable to give the book five starts is that there are numerous typos and not a few grammatical errors. The writer is clearly quite talented, so I attribute this to not enough time spent on thoroughly editing the work. It can be quite distracting when the rest of the language flows so nicely.
This book had just the style of writing I enjoy reading most. The characters talked and thought the way I like to talk and think. As that was the primary feature for me, little details that might be better fleshed out didn't matter so much.

I think it could have been a little longer; I wanted more from a few scenes and a couple of characters. I think the obvious magnetism between the two main characters could have been taken up half a notch, and I'd have liked resolution for one or two minor points. But mainly it was a terrific long dialogue between two interesting people, and I enjoyed that very much.

The review format asks if there is sexual content. I have learned that with book readers, even a kiss can be considered sexual, and often "unclean." That notion disturbs me greatly, and so I didn't choose an answer. I would say there is no sexual content; others might measure with a finer ruler and label mere possibilities as such.
Another tale of Recency male love from Katherine Marlowe, and while I am a generally a big fan of her works, this one, wasn't for me. On one level I appreciate all the time and effort it must have taken to craft this story with its myriad references to philosophy, poetry and theology. However, things were a little too safe and slow for me. That said, the characters are charming and they aren't constantly placed in the traditional dominate partner and the submissive more feminine partner roles, which was very refreshing. It made both Gilbert and Laurie feel like real people. Relationships, romantic or otherwise, are complicated and oftentimes the dynamic of power or the "masculinity" and "femininity" is not consistent between two people. Oftentimes with the M/M genre that concept is shoved squarely into leading couple, and that is tiring. Marlowe is never tiring with her characterization, or the elegant way she paints historical Great British society.
If you like fluff, poetry and philosophy, two adorable leads, and maybe a heartwarming orphan, this one is for you. )
This book is one of the most beautiful, well-written romance novels I've ever had the pleasure to read. I've read many period romance novels, but never one that seemed so wholly in touch with the time period as this. In Ms. Marlowe's capable hands, the entire era comes alive, which only makes the romance between the two characters all the more compelling. Given the danger of openly admitting to homosexual love in this era, the overtures of love are done tentatively and obliquely, often through poetry and discussions of philosophy. Every quote from the Classics or line of verse become frankly heartbreaking in this context, and I was so moved that I ended up copying down half the poems for later re-reading. It all contributes to a tender, delicate love story filled with longing, doubt, and a happy ending that me cheering the characters along!
I'd highly recommend this book for many reasons. I immediately connected with the characters and was rooting for them to end up together, though I liked the pace at which their relationship emerged. The writing was excellent with a well developed plot. The philosophical discourse and poetry fit nicely into the story while being both intriguing and educational as to the literature of that time period.

I felt like I had an intimate viewport into the era and was swept along with the characters on their joyous, sometimes tumultuous journey.
